Former President Milton Obote wants African leaders to stop fleecing their countries.

In an interview in the Zambian Post on Wednesday, Dr Obote said that it is wrong for leaders to steal from the people who elected them.

"I get surprised when I hear that African presidents are accused of corruption. People vote for you and then you steal from them!" Obote said.

Obote has lived in exile in Zambia since 1985 when his Uganda People's Congress government was overthrown in a
military coup.

Obote said that he never stole anything during his reign from 1962 to 1971 and 1981 to 1985.

"I don't own any property in Zambia or in Uganda. I don't have any investment anywhere in the world," the former president said.
